It is conjectured by some that a personโ€™s handwriting can give a glimpse into that personโ€™s character. But I am a skeptic in this regard, because in my opinion, the handwriting of an individual is not a constant, but keeps on morphing as time goes by.

A case in point is your humble friend, who has seen his handwriting deteriorate over the past few decades, till now, in my fifth decade, it is nothing more than a painstaking, almost illegible scrawl- although, with the advent of the now ubiquitous personal computer and other sundry devices, the negative impact of this deterioration has been minimized, especially in official work. Because today, when I write a note on any file with my own hand, others find it rather difficult to โ€˜decry-ptโ€™. Even filling simple financial documents like a cheque is a nightmare now, a stiff challenge, which is increasingly being left to my better half to handle, as bank people, on a few occasions, have raised doubts about the authenticity of my signature.

But before the readers start commiserating about the sad and agonizing state of my handwriting, I will share with them that this was not always the case. In the early years of school, I was the darling of my teachers because of my neat and clean handwriting, which made me the cynosure of my peers. Writing on four line copies, I would get full marks in English handwriting. The slide commenced from middle school onwards, when I shifted from writing with a pencil to writing with a ball pen, and the copy changed from one with four lines to that with two lines. But the hand was still steady, and teachers did not have any problem in reading my answer sheets, as was evident from the good grades I continued to get in my exams. But I am sure, that as I entered college and the university in the mid-eighties, the good professors would have become increasingly impatient in poring over my messy answer sheets, with scribbles galore.

All throughout, my father, a diligent and thorough gentleman, with a very precise and beautiful handwriting, kept counselling me to stem the rot, even as I secured a job in the public sector in 1991. He gently warned that it would adversely impact my prospects of growth in the corporate world, especially when this was the period when all office work was conducted on well-defined sheets of paper- which, in my case, were to be yellow pages. Before leaving for Bombay (as Mumbai was then called), I scoffed at Dadโ€™s gentle, but consistent reprimands.

It was only when I took my first, tentative steps in the company did I realize that what Dad had been emphasizing over the years was not an iota away from the truth. I faced a mild, personal nudge from some bosses on this account, but others were not so kind, and their reaction bordered on outright contempt, reprimand and disapproval.

But Dad was an eternal optimist. He still harbored a strong wish to get my handwriting back on track, even at this stage, for which he purchased a book- โ€˜Techniques to improve your handwritingโ€™. I was back in kindergarten. So, whenever I came home to Delhi for a break, he would insist that I sit with him, at least for some time, and practice on ways to improve my, by now abominable handwriting. But by this point, my mind, like that of all young men, was engrossed in finer things of life than improving my writing ability, which, I realized, was destined to be an exercise in futility. This cat and mouse game continued even after I got married in 1993. It was only after I became a father in 1995 did Dad finally bury his desire to get my handwriting improved to a decent level.

Amen!

Insisting on improving your handwriting came from my teachers and parents all the time. I donโ€™t know if this was just in India or abroad too. Nostalgia reading your post. Reminds me of my days back in school too.

Such a smooth read..totally agree with what u wrote. I have always loved calligraphy and have tried using a fountain pen whenever there is a need to pen down anything. With fewer occasions to take the pen to hand, chances to use my fountain pen are very therapeutic for me. We must not forget writing on the paper..

    Thanks for sharing Sir!
Post College and now in Job, we hardly give importance to fair handwriting as focus has shifted to typing skills rather than writing skills.

I love your writing style as it takes me back to my younger days. We all had similar challenges.
But fret not and regret not ! All noble souls had a writing only that or the God could decipher. Eg Mahatama Gandhi, Lincoln and Mandela.
As for your father, he was the quintessential doting father who wanted his sons writing to have some semblance of recognition.God Bless his soul !!

Last word of advise, buy that 4 line book and a pencil.

    Sir,
A nice blog on the gradual decline of handwriting skills. The way your fatherย  urged you to improve your hand writingย is bound to strike a universal chord with us all. To some it’s mother, to some it’s father. But the universal desire to see divinity flourishing in the form of his/her kids’ brilliant handwriting binds all parents.

The other day a cartoon caught my attention. It shows an advertisement of a writing school somewhere in the 3rd millennial with the caption “Learn how to write like an ancient man”. But the demise of handwritten words won’t have to wait so long, I reckon.
ย  ย  ย Your predicament is not your’s alone. As my fingers learnt to race along the keyfields of computers like a F1 pro, it gradually unlearnt the rudimentary skills of penning to glory. If yours is illegible, I worked with shattered confidence at the baby pace at which my pens crawled when my boss on the other side of the table raced along with his copious notes and instructions. Of all the perils, I found my abysmal slow writing speed to be the most detrimental in professional space.ย ย  ย  ย
Liked your blogs for you have raised a pertinent point and a malady that probably afflicts us all. It will continue till digital world engulfs us completely. However. It’s strange that still there are niche buyers willing to go as high as Mont blanc to grab a writing piece. But that’s another story. Waiting eagerlyย for next piece of meat from you on some other interesting topic.

The witchover from pencil to fountain pen and then only a ball pen was allowed in my school…but I guess handwriting does take a slide over the years and as we age gracefully the handwriting only worsens…you are making all of us very conscious!

Gratitude towards the keyboard on our laptops and phones, we just need to be more adept at the use of software rather than indulge ourselves in the more laborious task of writing aesthetically whenever we need to vent out our inner expressions.
However pursuing the art of calligraphy is a personal choice with me because it is also a good exercise for the fine muscles in my hand๐Ÿ˜‚
Loved every bit of your write up ,kudos to you you for being able to articulate your inner thoughts so quintessentially.

Over a period of time as our body functions mature, the hand also takes it share, advent of computers no doubt takes it toll. The demise of letter writing has in this last two decades and also emails led to hand writing declines. Nevertheless a good essay on its importance

    Wonderfully Refreshing Topic
I remember sure people said that you cannot read a doctors handwriting. The more difficult to read the prescription the bigger is the doctor perceived to be.

When I look at the young generation, the hand writing skills are going from bad to worse with use of computers and IPADS.

But I agree it’s important to be conscious and work on handwriting just like what a command on voice does to your verbal communication.
