Kaash Mera Khoya Basant, Wapas AA jaaye….

By

Today, as we collectively herald spring,

A middle-aged stranger mocks at my loss,

Clicked by my best half, Sonia Malhotra

Poking fun at my childhood memories,

When spring lorded over my beloved Delhi,

For a few priceless weeks,

As winter ebbed, &summer was still faraway,

When I danced silly to the gusts of rejuvenation,

&the tesu colored my heart with joy,

When the sparrow serenaded to life,

My small dreams riding on its tender wings,

The sparrows, which were once found in abundance in my beloved Delhi, are sadly, now extinct……..

The spirited parrots played on the branches of trees,

Making me exult with joy and happiness,

When the sight of prancing squirrels,

Infused me with bouts of verve,

When the maidaans draped a carpet of blooms &butterflies,

With bougainvillea flowers playing a Holi of white, red &orange,

When folklore of the days gone by, were still shared by family elders,

Of times when Lahore was in India, &kites flew galore,

When yellow lorded the landscape, &love was in the air………

But today, I stumble, falling hard on the ground,

Petrified of our ever increasing compartmentalization,

Into yours& mine, of snowballing hate& bigotry,

Of the permanence of a lost innocence,

As, from its majestic perch, the fiery tesu needles me,

Observing, as I mourn the disappearance of the meek sparrow,

&breathe the polluted air of my beloved Delhi,

Imprisoned in the ever expanding jungle of concrete,

Hidden behind a murky smokescreen,

Everything smothered by the crazy cacophony of traffic……..

Today, on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami,

With all the spirituality flowing within me,

I pray to the God’s I believe in,

To make my memories come alive, once again……

Basant Panchami, 16th February 2021with my best half, Sonia

Exceptional expression giving a beautiful account of how we, humans, have lost the touch of beauty and nature and got engrossed in the materialized world where there seems no place nor any time for appreciation of natural beauty. The changes brought about in the environment due to our own selfish needs and greediness have been detrimental for the other earthlings who were supposed to be living and flourishing in their natural habitats. If only we could learn a little faster and act a little wiser, we might be able to save what is left of the environment, if not get back what is already lost.

It is such a beautiful thought that you have brought forth through this write-up Malhotra ji. Loved the concern and the sensitive portrayal of the yesteryear when nature and humans walked hand in hand….when the birds, the animals, the other earthlings didn’t have to fear for their habitats which sadly humans have been snatching away from them, oblivious of the consequences. But the things are bound to change….there isn’t a miracle waiting to happen in future…rather such beautiful thoughts, the concern, the ideas shall spread far and wide and the birds, the animals who are the right owners of the nature shall get it back soon….if only many more people think like you and act in this direction the day is not far. Thanks for spreading hope denoting a positive change.

APS …. Beautifully written. Your imagery of a bygone Delhi was both sweet and poignant at the same time. Lookbacks are tricky given the risk of glossing over the inconvenient stuff. But this was a pleasure to read.
PS … there is beauty in concrete too … maybe not so much in the pollution.

    Kudos to you

    Beautiful !
Difficult to smell the air the same as we did in our childhood.
    Yes Delhi has changed
Or may be aging is difficult for ecology also….

    it has lost its innocence…
Or may be it has grown older shouldering the responsibilities of others misdeeds….

Very sweetly pened words and thoughts. You took us back to our childhood and days when we were not caged in this concrete Jungle and gadgets driven life.

But sadly those days do not seem to come back again …but with such beautiful poetry, we get the opportunity to revisit and refresh our those sweet and bounty memories.

    Keep going Ap…Great
